If you are inspired by my writing, how I think about things, and what I have learned from working on myself, I would love to explore these topics further with you!
What is coaching?
The International Coaching Federation defines coaching as “partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to be their best personal and professional selves.”
A life coach is not an “expert on life.” Rather, a coach is trained in the art of guided self-exploration, using powerful questions, exercises, and frameworks to help bring the client to their own answers, offering support, structure, and accountability along the way.
The coaching process
As a coach, I draw upon a variety of frameworks and tools, but my guiding principle is that the answer exists within the client. My job is to use these tools to help you go deeper into yourself and uncover the wisdom and direction that lies within.
Some tools and frameworks I use include:
- Value mining
- Identifying interests and passions
- Setting and achieving goals
- Identifying and utilizing strengths
- Saboteur wrangling (identifying and working with the parts of us that sabotage our goals)
- Sage summoning (discovering and calling upon the parts of us that contain deep wisdom)
- Mindfulness
- Active imagination
- Visualization
- Expressive arts (drawing, journaling, use of music)
- MBTI/Jungian typology
- Nature coaching
- Habit formation
- Developing structures, systems, and accountability
Some common topics for coaching include:
- Navigating career changes
- Finding life direction
- Developing creative potential
- Navigating a musical or creative career
- Having “too many interests”
- Thriving with ADHD
- Time management and life organization
- Self-management
- Getting into action
- Habit formation
Some examples of recent coaching sessions:
- A client had been struggling with avoiding unpleasant tasks. We worked on identifying the parts of her that were keeping her stuck, and found an effective strategy to work through the avoidance
- A client was looking to find a new career path. We worked through some exercises to identify his strengths and his true desires, and to work through self-doubt
- A client was struggling with time management and organization while trying to make progress on creative goals. We developed structures and an accountability plan to create sustained forward momentum
- A client was struggling to follow the plans she set for herself. Through active imagination, the client integrated the conflicting parts of herself and achieved much-improved follow-through
- A client was trying to balance personal branding and authenticity. Through exploring different perspectives, the client was able to find an authentic and personally satisfying way of marketing his skills
- A client was dealing with burnout and exhaustion from spinning plates. We identified her priorities and boundaries, connected with her core values, and created a focused action plan
- A client was experiencing mixed feelings about her job. We uncovered her true desires to shift towards a new direction, and created an “off-ramp” with structured accountabilities
- A client was looking for more joy in her life. We uncovered a long-lost creative passion, which she began integrating into her daily life, leading to greater energy and happiness
